our history
the masterton club, established in 1877 originally as a Gentleman’s club, is one of the oldest in new zealand
Originally sited on the corners of Chapel, Perry and Cole Streets, this land was purchased for £360, and for many years it was substantially a farmer’s club with a natural attraction to professionals and businessmen.
The next 20 years saw the fortunes of the club rise and wane with the price of wool, but in 1903 insufficient stable and buggy shed accommodation, along with the close proximity of custodian quarters, necessitated the purchase of the present site.
With the old club disposed of, a new building costing £2,847 was built, and from 1913 until 2009 the club has retained its original character, apart from the internal alterations to accommodate the new Dining Room, now called the Boddington Room.
Having a major refurbishment, the club has continued to evolve into what is now regarded as Masterton’s Premier Members’ club, providing a warm and inviting atmosphere for a diverse group of men and women in the heart of Masterton.
Our Club was established in 1877 as a Gentlemen’s Club and its facilities on this site then included both accommodation and stables. Today the Club is well used by its members and also a range of Service clubs and other organisations, that hire our facilities.
